Now I know that the title of this entry is probably a bit confusing, so allow me to explain. No we did not take any aircraft to Flagstaff but the roads we drove, specifically 89 & 89A, were very good pavement with fantastic curves and switchbacks all with proper camber and with the cars we were driving just begged to be driven in a “sporting fashion”. The total run was about 125 miles, but in the interest of not being scolded too severely by Judy, I will defer in sharing the total drive time.
The scenery was breathtaking and we did stop a couple of times to take in the vistas. One particular stop was at the Granite Mountain Hotshot Memorial. There are 19 plaques with the bios and life stories of the 19 courageous young firefighters who lost their lives in a tragic wildfire on the mountain. It is a heart wrenching story and memorial. John has an excellent post in his blog with details of that event, and I encourage you to read it.
Upon cresting the mountains heading into Sedona, we traveled through Jerome, AZ, a small town built into the side of the mountain. It had several ridiculously sharp switchbacks and reminded me of Apricale in the Italian Alps, only with wider roads thank goodness!
Not a lot to say on this one otherwise, so enjoy the scenery. We sure did!
