Abe’s Neighborhood

As you may know from reading John’s blog, we experienced an unplanned delay in our trek when his car broke down at Gardner, IL. The car was towed to Springfield, IL where we spent the next two nights. An unfortunate delay turned into a wonderful adventure.

The next morning was Sunday, and no repair shops were open. John and Mike ventured out on a bike ride, and I went for a extensive exploratory walk. Our hotel was right downtown in close proximity to the old statehouse along with the beautifully restored historic district, which features Abraham Lincoln’s house. Lincoln and his family lived in the house for 17 years, and three of his children were born there. It was coincidentally the last private home he lived in as he left it when he became President.

It was a beautiful day in Springfield, and we met a number of incredibly wonderful people at the hotel, downtown, and later at Motorheads Bar Grill & Museum, where the owner loaned us a floor jack and jack stands to allow John to make enough repair to get us to a repair shop on Monday. We returned to Motorheads later that day to enjoy a tasty meal. Abe lived in a great neighborhood!
